Carrying on my theme of Japanese foodservice and tableware, here are two examples oftypical dinner sets a diner is presented with when ordering food. One is from a very high end establishment, and the other is a student canteen. At all levels, the diner is put in charge of a beautifully presented meal; they can finish it as they like.
Affordance Delight
On a recent visit to Matsuyama (Southern Japan) I came across perhaps the best bit of tableware design I've ever seen. This sake bowl has the perfect set of affordances to enable you to grasp it with your right hand, so the more sake you drink, the less likely you are to overthink and spill when pouring some more.
It also got me thinking again about how few objects we use that are purposefully asymmetrical in form. Think there's a project in there somewhere...
